Richard Avedon is dead. I don’t know if you know this, but I actually am a trained photographer, and I once did a multimedia presentation about Alexey Brodovitch, Richard Avedon’s mentor/teacher/art director. And that’s how I came to know Avedon in the first place, and I liked his photography ever since.
I wrote a German article at mask.at about him, linking a lot of famous pictures he made. Did you know that he also did Simon and Garfunkel’s Bookends cover? And the famous Eisenhower portrait. And Marilyn Monroe, Frank Zappa, Hillary Clinton, Michael Moore, the Beatles, Bob Dylan, you name them, he photographed them all. And he did it all with his famous 8×10 inch large format camera, and always in black and white.
And I also love to do black and white portraits in large format. As a matter of fact, my final assignment at art school was a large format portrait. Ah the good old times ...
